How to configure Custom RDP settings in Windows 2008 RemoteApp

When you create Windows 2008 remote app programs you can configure most of the settings in TS RemoteApp Manager that are available in the options settings of Remote Desktop such as display settings, device redirection, etc. However a most of the settings are unavailable. The one I use the most is the "Reconnect if the connection is dropped". When this setting is enabled the remote desktop session will automatically attempt to reconnect the end use to their session when it gets dropped (usually with a bad net connection or when using wireless).

The easiest way to get these custom settings into RemoteApp Deployment Settings is to copy them from a local Remote Desktop file.

1.        On your local computer create and RDP file and select all the settings you want to apply to your RemoteApp session.

2.        Save the .RDP file to you computer

3.        Open the RDP file in notepad and you should see something like this:

screen mode id:i:2

use multimon:i:0

desktopwidth:i:1680

desktopheight:i:1050

session bpp:i:32

winposstr:s:0,3,0,0,800,600

compression:i:1

keyboardhook:i:2

audiocapturemode:i:0

videoplaybackmode:i:1

connection type:i:6

displayconnectionbar:i:1

username:s:

disable wallpaper:i:0

allow font smoothing:i:1

allow desktop composition:i:1

disable full window drag:i:0

disable menu anims:i:0

disable themes:i:0

disable cursor setting:i:0

bitmapcachepersistenable:i:1

full address:s:

audiomode:i:0

redirectprinters:i:1

redirectcomports:i:0

redirectsmartcards:i:1

redirectclipboard:i:1

redirectposdevices:i:0

redirectdirectx:i:1

drivestoredirect:s:*

autoreconnection enabled:i:1

authentication level:i:0

prompt for credentials:i:0

negotiate security layer:i:1

remoteapplicationmode:i:0

alternate shell:s:

shell working directory:s:

gatewayhostname:s:

gatewayusagemethod:i:2

gatewaycredentialssource:i:4

gatewayprofileusagemethod:i:1

promptcredentialonce:i:1

use redirection server name:i:0

4.        Now all you have to do is copy the setting you wish to use autoreconnection enabled:i:1 in this case and paste it into the custom RDP settings in TS RemoteApp Manager.

Most of these settings can also be managed using Group Policies but I like to force this one setting as it’s the one thing customers want to happen when using YourOfficeAnyWhere remote applications over the internet.
